Miami FC vs. Rowdies

Miami FC 1 vs. Rowdies 1
Marking the rebirth of the South Florida rivalry, the first meeting in the 2010 Coastal Cup between the Rowdies and Miami FC ended in a 1-1 draw.
"This rivalry is something new for us, for the players and coaches," Miami FC head coach Victor Pastora said. "You can see it in the stands and it's about bragging rights. It's going to be a great rivalry.
"We're still undefeated, but we need to win. We're at home and we want to get three points," Pastora continued. "I'm proud of the guys and the fact that they're working hard and doing well."
With the Rowdies applying pressure throughout the entire match, Miami FC’s goalkeeper Caleb Patterson-Sewell made save after save for the Blues. After a Julian Valentin goal in the 82nd minute tied up the match, the Rowdies came alive and very nearly won the match.
“I don’t think their goalkeeper will ever play a game as good as he did tonight again in his life. He had some real top-class saves,” said Head Coach Paul Dalglish after the match.
Miami created a few chances in the first half, as did the Rowdies. After picking up the ball near midfield, Stanley Nyazamba showed some clever footwork as he beat Miami defenders into the third. He then dished it to Pascal Millien, whose shot went just over the crossbar.
Long Tan and Milien took hard shots on target and forced Patterson-Swell to punch the ball over his own crossbar in the 29th and 38th minutes, respectively.
Miami midfielder Christian Gomez received a clever back-heeled pass from Paulo Araujo Jr. beating Rowdies goalkeeper Daryl Sattler to give the Blues a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute.
Drew Yates, who made his first professional start in the match, nearly equalized the score in the 44th minute with a shot, which rolled just wide on the post.
Just after the halftime break, Gomez was in the spotlight again. He received a straight red card because of a behind slide tackle to Rowdies striker Aaron Wheeler near midfield.
Playing with a man advantage for nearly the entire second half, the Rowdies took a long time to assert themselves despite Miami sitting deeper and deeper in defenselater in the half. Takuya Yamada’s shot in the 54th minute hit the post as the Rowdies inched close to tying the match, but then a spell of about twenty minutes of Miami domination ensued. In fact, Miami looked better with ten men during this period than had with a eleven thoughout much of the first half.
But it was Miami who had the best chance in the next few minutes when Chris Gbandi's free kick beat the Rowdies' wall only to be saved by Daryl Sattler.
The seemingly inevitable breakthrough came in the 82nd minute as Chad Burt’s corner kick found it’s way to Rowdies captain Julian Valentin. Valentin headed the ball into the back of the net to tie up the match.
Spurred on by the chance for a road victory, the Rowdies kept up the pressure on the Miami defense. Seconds into extra time, a curling shot from Pascal Millien appeared to be destined to tuck just inside the far post, but was saved by Patterson-Sewell, who was in a full horizontal dive.
The Rowdies completed the season-opening three-match road trip with four points, but Dalglish feels they could have earned more.
“We’re going back to Tampa very disappointed that we didn’t pick up these three points," said Dalglish. "Although we’re disappointed to not get the win, it was very positive to get as many scoring chances on the road as we did.”
“Our offense definitely improved from last week. Obviously if we were a little more clinical in front of the goal, we’d be coming back with all three points. We’ve still got work to do in the final third, but we’re getting better every week and we’re optimistic heading into our first home game.”
The Rowdies opens their home schedule with a game against the high flying Austin Aztex.
