Rowdies vs. AC St. Louis
Rowdies 2 vs. AC St. Louis 2
Yendry Diaz earned what could be a crucial point for the Rowdies (6-9-10) with the game-tying goal in second half stoppage time. AC St. Louis (5-11-8) had been leading 2-1 before Diaz’s goal evened the score. This point levels the Rowdies on 28 points with NSC Minnesota for eighth and ninth place. Because of a goal difference advantage over the Stars, the Rowdies are now in the eighth position and would qualify for the playoffs if the season ended today.
The game began in disastrous fashion for the Rowdies after a Rob Valentino own goal in the fifth minute gifted St. Louis a 1-0 lead early on. The goal came in controversial fashion after most Rowdies players believed the ball had actually crossed the endline before Luke Kreamalmeyer made the pass that led to the own goal.
“The players are saying the ball went over the endline. If it went over the line I guess it’s just another bad turn of luck. We really seem to be not getting the breaks at the moment. We’ve got an honest bunch of players who told me it was out,” said Head Coach Paul Dalglish.
The deficit was doubled in the 19th minute when St. Louis forward Mike Ambersley found some open space and took a shot from about 25 yards out that found the back of the net. Diving to his left, Daryl Sattler was able to get a hand on the ball but couldn’t prevent the goal.
Just before halftime, midfielder Jonny Steele showed some dribbling skills before taking a shot from the edge of the 18-yard box and closing the deficit to one goal. It was Steele’s first goal of the season. He also recorded an assist on Diaz’s late goal.
“When you look at the fact that we were two-nil down, it was a big result to come back but we need to win games to get to the playoffs. If you give away two goals in the playoffs, you’ll be out of the playoffs,” said Steele.
The second half insertion of Yendry Diaz turned out to be a good decision as it was the Cuban who earned the point in dramatic fashion. It was Diaz’s first league goal of the season.
“Maybe this is the point that gets us into the playoffs. I thought for the majority of the game tonight we absolutely dominated. There are five games left and we don’t need to finish first to win the championship. We only need to finish eighth to get in,” said Dalglish.
Lineups:
Rowdies Lineup: Sattler, Kljestan (35' - Wheeler), Valentino, Donoho, Valentin, Sanchez, Tan (77' - Burt), Steele, Millien, Nyazamba (84' - Yamada), Galindo (69' - Yendry Diaz) .

Rowdies vs. Carolina Railhawks
Rowdies 1 vs. Carolina Railhawks 2
A poor defensive performance in the first half doomed the Rowdies (6-9-9) to a 2-1 loss to the visiting Carolina RailHawks (9-7-7) on Wednesday night. First half goals from Matt Bobo and Etienne Barbara gave Carolina a two-goal lead at the halftime break.
“The first half was the worst defensively that we’ve ever been. We just keep conceding the first goal. There’s no sugarcoating it; it’s happened too many times,” said Head Coach Paul Dalglish. “It gets very very frustrating. There were mistakes in the first half that should never ever happen.”
Miscommunications among the defensive line meant opportunities for the RailHawks forwards to get into one-on-one or two-on-one situations multiple times in the opening 45 minutes. Bobo’s 23rd minute goal came from a free header after a Daniel Paladini corner kick.
Matt Watson set up the second goal for Barbara after a clever through ball released the forward towards goal on his own in the 40th minute.
If not for crucial saves in the first half, Carolina could have had a lead larger than two goals.
“We kept our line way too high. They were clever putting the balls right through the back. Two-v-one facing me is never a good thing for me or any team. I just think our back five weren’t all on the same page,” said goalkeeper Daryl Sattler, who recorded six saves in the match.
The insertion of winger Pascal Millien at the halftime break rejuvenated the Rowdies’ offensive movement. As the second half progressed in heavy rain, Millien and his teammates were limited by the growing puddles collecting on the infield dirt.
“I made a change at halftime that seemed to work. I knew we were going to score and then I was pretty confident that we were going to get another one as well. Pascal Millien came on and did great as an attacking fullback. We caused them a lot of problems and made them earn a victory in the second half,” said Dalglish.
The Rowdies looked like they might just steal a point from this game after all with a flurry of late offensive activity. Second half substitute Aaron Wheeler sent a header just wide of Carolina goalkeeper Nic Platter’s right hand post in the 80th minute.
Ricardo Sanchez shifted the balance of the match with an 88th minute free kick goal from about 27 yards away from goal. It was Sanchez’s fourth goal since joining the Rowdies last month. Just moments later Sanchez had another chance with a free kick but put his shot just over the crossbar. In the 64th minute a Sanchez free kick struck the crossbar before going out of bounds.
With the Rowdies trailing 2-1 in stoppage time, Maykel Galindo nearly scored the equalizer after his shot beat Platter. The ball was cleared by a RailHawks defender about one foot from the goal line.
Lineups:
Rowdies Lineup: Sattler, Tatters, Valentino, Diaz (46' - Millien), Valentin, Yates (54' - Wheeler), Sanchez, Steele, Yamada (61' - Nyazamba), Tan, Galindo.
Carolina RailHawks Lineup: Platter, Shields, Bobo, Schulte, Gilkerson, Franks (77' - Lowery), Watson (73' - Low), Paladini, Davidson, Barbara (85' - Budnyy), Russell.
Goalscoring Summary:
Railhawks - Matt Bobo - 23' (Assisted by Daniel Paladini)

Rowdies vs. Vancouver Whitecaps
Rowdies 1 vs. Vancouver Whitecaps 1
The goalposts were the Rowdies’ worst enemy on Thursday as they hosted the NASL Conference leading Vancouver Whitecaps at George M. Steinbrenner Field. If not for the repeated denial by the goal frame, the Rowdies (6-8-9) likely would have earned all three available points, but will instead accept a 1-1 draw.
The Rowdies dominated the shots total 17 to six and hit the goal frame four times.
“Seems like a familiar story for us this season doesn’t it? We’ve dominated teams but missed chances. We hit crossbars and goal posts. We can’t feel sorry for ourselves though. We’ve got to make sure that we stay positive because we’re playing really, really well right now,” said Head Coach Paul Dalglish. “It’s really frustrating that we don’t turn these games into wins, but we see the positives in playing so well.”
Tampa native Blake Wagner scored just seven minutes into the match to give Vancouver an early lead. Wagner’s powerful shot came from distance and beat the Rowdies’ 19 year old goalkeeper Josh Lambo. Lambo made only his third start of the season and his first at home.
“The shot from Wagner was just a scorcher. Sometimes it’s just a good shot. It was moving and I saw it late and it was just a great shot,” said Lambo.
It took less than 20 minutes for the Rowdies to fight back and find their equalizer. Aaron King continued his hot streak and cleaned up a Jonny Steele shot that had been deflected twice in the box for his ninth goal of the season in the 26th minute.
Unfortunately King tweaked his hamstring in the process of scoring and had to be substituted off immediately after his goal.
“Steele made eye contact before he served it in so I made that run to the near post. One defender tried to clear it and then it went through the legs of a second defender and it bounced right to me. It’s a forward’s gift I guess,” said King. “Even when I was on the bench after I left I could tell that we were going to have chances to win this game.”
The Rowdies dominated the rest of the game after pulling even. Steele hit the crossbar late in the first half.
The Rowdies had great scoring chances early in the second half. Pascal Millien blasted a shot off goalkeeper Jay Nolly’s crossbar in the 54th minute. The ball eventually found its way to Rob Valentino, whose header across the face of goal went wide of the post.
Just four minutes later Valentino had another chance when he got onto the end of a Ricardo Sanchez corner kick. Valentino’s header again went just wide.
In the 83rd minute Sanchez was involved in the attack again. Maykel Galindo brought the ball into the box and took a shot that was saved by Nolly. The rebound made its way to Sanchez who lifted the ball over Nolly but into the goalpost.
Vancouver nearly won the game in the 85th minute with a fast break by Takashi Hirano and Cornelius Stewart. Hirano had the ball and sent a square pass to Stewart for a one-on-one situation with Lambo. Stewart’s shot was headed for the corner of the goal but Lambo dove left in time to save the shot.
“I think when I wake up tomorrow I’ll think this was a good point that we just earned, but right now it feels like two points lost because of the way we played. We need to get on a little run of victories before the playoffs start,” said Dalglish. “I’m telling you now that anybody who watches our tapes won’t fancy seeing us in the playoffs.”
Lineups:
Rowdies Lineup: Lambo, Valentino, Tatters, Valentin, Diaz, Steele, Yamada, Sanchez, Tan (72' - Wheeler), Galindo, King (29' - Millien).
Vancouver Whitecaps Lineup: Nolly, Bellisomo, Knight, Janicki, Hirano, Wagner, Dunfield, Nash, Davies (69' - Williams), Mobulu (46' - Stewart (90'+ - Edwin-Bonsu), Arnoux (46' - McDonald).
Goalscoring Summary:
Whitecaps - Blake Wagner - 7'
