Rowdies vs. Orlando City Soccer Club (I-4 Derby Game 2)

Rowdies Fall to Orlando City in Second Leg of I-4 Derby
The Tampa Bay Rowdies fell short of a comeback against Orlando City on Saturday night, dropping the second leg of the I-4 Derby Presented by United World Soccer. The 3-2 loss on Saturday crowned Orlando City champions of the I-4 Derby, after defeating Tampa Bay 6-4 on aggregate.
The Lions scored two first-half goals, as forward Kevin Molina and Adama Mbengue increased Orlando’s lead to 5-2 on aggregate. Rowdies defender Takuya Yamada would put the Rowdies just two goals away from penalty kicks, scoring at the end of the half. Tampa Bay came out dominating play in the second half, leveling the second leg score thanks to forward Amani Walker. Orlando City’s counter attack sentenced the series, as forward Dom Dwyer would score the 3-2 goal in the 90th minute.
Early in the first half, Orlando City’s Molino would score the go-ahead goal in the 5th minute. Mbengue picked up the assist, after leaving Molino one-on-one with Rowdies Goalkeeper Andrew Fontein.
The Rowdies goalkeeper continued to make several key saves, but Mbengue would get a goal of his own in the 33rd minute. Fontein stopped the initial shot by Dwyer, but was unable to get a hand on the rebound that put the Lions up 2-0.
Being two goals down, the Rowdies began to retain more possession, in turn creating several chances on Orlando’s goal. The pressure would pay off, as Yamada would cut the lead to one in the 42nd minute, scoring off a penalty kick that was awarded to the Rowdies after forward Georgi Hristov was brought down in the box. The Rowdies would enter the second half down 5-3 on aggregate goals, needing to score two in order to force the series to penalty kicks.
The reining NASL Champions started the second half determined to get the two goals necessary to tie the series up. The Rowdies would score in the 51st minute making it 2-2, with Walker netting on Orlando for the second time in the I-4 Derby. The forward’s goal would put the Rowdies just one goal away from sending the series to penalty kicks.
With just over half an hour left in the match, the Rowdies were forced to push their players forward, leaving open gaps in the defense. Even though the Rowdies created chances, they were unable to finish in the final third. Orlando City was able to take advantage of those open spaces, scoring their third goal of the night in the 90th minute. Dwyer sentenced the series, putting the Lions ahead 6-4 on aggregate.

Rowdies vs. Saint Leo University (Exhibition Game)

Rowdies Defeat Saint Leo University 2-1
The Tampa Bay Rowdies won their third straight game on Saturday night, defeating Saint Leo University 2-1 at Mitchell Fields. An early goal in the first half by midfielder Luke Mulholland put the Rowdies up 1-0, while second half substitute Devin Del Do doubled the lead in the 49th minute. The Lions would cut the lead to one in the 70th minute after a defensive error from the Rowdies. A late push from the Lions would prove to be unsuccessful, as the Rowdies would hold on for the 2-1 win.
The NASL side had several dangerous headers in the first 10 minutes thanks to some great crossing by Mulholland and midfielder Raphael Cox. The Rowdies pressure would pay off, as in the 12th minute Campbell found Mulholland in open space, who smashed his strike in the upper right corner from 25 yards out.
Forward Georgi Hristov was close to doubling the lead in the 22nd minute having his shot saved by Saint Leo’s goalkeeper Manuel Schoenhuber. Mulholland continued to be the Rowdies main offensive threat with multiple chances before the half came to an end.
Minutes into the second half, Del Do scored what would be a decisive goal for the Rowdies. The forward received a great through ball from midfielder Kyle Clinton, finding himself one-on-one with the Lions goalkeeper at the top of the box. Del Do would place his kick in the bottom left corner of the net to make it 2-0.
After the second goal, the NASL Champions continued to dominate the match but they would be unable to extend their lead. In what was one of the only dangerous chances that Saint Leo would have in the match, Lions forward Josh Davis capitalized on a Rowdies defensive mistake scoring the final goal of the night.
Having cut the lead in half, the Lions looked to equalize off counter attacks and crosses into the box. The Rowdies continued to play intelligently in the final minutes of play, keeping possession and not letting Saint Leo create any dangerous chances.

Rowdies vs. University of Tampa (Exhibition Game)

Rowdies Defeat Spartans 3-1
On Tuesday March 19th, the Tampa Bay Rowdies earned their third win of the 2013 Preseason Tour on Tuesday night, after defeating the University of Tampa 3-1 at Pepin Stadium. The Rowdies opened the scoring in the 11th minute after midfielder Keith Savage's 20-yard strike. The NASL Champions saw their early lead disappear minutes later as UT forward Craig Laird leveled the match in the 14th minute. Two goals before the end of the first half led the Rowdies to a 3-1 win, with midfielder Shane Hill and forward Georgi Hristov scoring in the 40th and 43rd minute respectively.
The NASL side began the first half controlling possession of the ball, similar to the start against Eckerd College last week. Forward Carl Cort made two great runs in the first 10 minutes but he was unable to capitalize on his chances.
The Rowdies scored an early goal 11 minutes into the match, as Savage put the Rowdies up 1-0 with a strike from outside the 18-yard box that found the bottom right corner of the net. The Rowdies lead wouldn’t last, as the Spartans equalized in the 14th minute. The NASL side was unable to clear the ball off a Spartans corner kick, and after a series of rebounds Laird erased the Rowdies one-goal lead.
Cort had yet another chance in the 18th minute, as his powerful strike sailed wide left after a great series of one-touch passing with midfielder Luke Mulholland.
For the second consecutive match, both Hill and Hristov were able to get on the scoring sheet. Hill put the Rowdies ahead 2-1 in the 40th minute, receiving a great assist from Cort who left the midfielder with a clear shot from inside the box. Hristov would sentence the match in the 43rd minute after a great individual run, touching the ball past the goalkeeper and pushing it into the empty goal.
With the 3-1 score, the Rowdies entered the second half with several substitutions, but they continued to dominate possession. Second-half substitutes Devin Del Do and Amani Walker had several chances to extend the Rowdies lead throughout the second half, but the Rowdies were unable to finish in the final third.
After an early defensive mistake, Tampa Bay's back line improved as the game went on. Spartans leading goal scorer Tyler Blackwood was found himself uncomfortable throughout the match, as the Rowdies anticipated Tampa's offense constantly leading to a clean sheet in the second half.

Scoring Summary
Rowdies: Keith Savage - 11th minute
University of Tampa: Craig Laird - 14th minute
Rowdies: Shane Hill - 40th minute (assisted by Carl Cort)
Rowdies: Georgi Hristov - 43rd minute

Rowdies vs. Eckerd College (Exhibition Game)

Rowdies Rout Tritons 5-0
The Tampa Bay Rowdies picked up their second victory of the preseason after defeating Eckerd College by a score of 5-0 on Wednesday night. Three goals in the first half secured the victory for the Rowdies, as newcomers forward Georgi Hristov and forward Amani Walker along with midfielder Luke Mulholland netted the goals for Tampa Bay. Walker and substitute midfielder Shane Hill scored in the second half to make it 5-0.
Mulholland scored the first goal in the 5th minute, after a great individual run. His shot from the left flank curled into the right side netting, putting the Rowdies ahead early in the half.
The early momentum carried on throughout the half, as the Rowdies continuously created chances on Eckerd's goal. In various opportunities, Walker was able to get into space and get a shot off but Tritons goalkeeper Virtanen was able to keep Eckerd within one goal. The constant pressure paid off as in the 35th minute Hristov laid a pass to Walker, who from inside the 6-yard box was able to slot it past the goalkeeper.
With just a few minutes left in the half, Hristov would make it 3-0 after crossing his shot from the top of the 18-yard box. Defender Takuya Yamada played a through ball to Hristov, leaving him with only the keeper to beat.
The second half proved to be no different, as the Rowdies dominated the play throughout the final 45 minutes. Walker would capitalize on the momentum and score the 4-0 in the 60th minute. Mulholland played a great one-touch cross from the left flank into Walker who extended the Rowdies lead.
The final goal of the night came in the 72nd minute from a powerful 35-yard strike from substitute Hill. Midfielder Evans Frimpong made a run down the left flank, finding Hill open in the middle. The England native smashed the ball past the goalkeeper into the top right corner of the net.
The Rowdies attack proved to be too much for an Eckerd team that never got situated in the match. With constant pressure from the Rowdies midfield, the Tritons saw themselves dominated throughout the 90 minutes. With the 5-0 victory, the Rowdies have now won two preseason matches.

Scoring Summary
Rowdies: Luke Mulholland - 5th minute

Rowdies Drop First Leg of I-4 Derby Pres. by United World Soccer
The Rowdies lost against Orlando City in the first leg of the I-4 Derby Presented by United World Soccer by a final score of 3-2. Tampa Bay was unable to hold a one-goal first half lead at the Fifth Third Bank Field at the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla.
Forward Amani Walker put the Rowdies ahead in the 18th minute after he intercepted a sloppy pass from the Lions defense. The newcomer picked up his first goal since coming to the Rowdies, slipping the ball past Orlando's goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo.
Orlando would come from behind to defeat the Rowdies with three goals in the second half. The first goal came in the 49th minute after Tampa Bay was unable to clear out a corner kick, which forward Jamie Watson capitalized to equalize the match. In the 58th minute, the Lions scored the go-ahead goal with a strike by midfielder James O'Conner from outside the 18-yard box. Orlando's third goal came in the 70th minute, as midfielder Jean Alexandre chipped the ball over Rowdies goalkeeper Andrew Fontein for the 3-1 lead.
Tampa Bay was able to slice the lead in half in the 75th minute after a great free kick by midfieler Luke Mulholland. The Rowdies midfielder slotted the ball into the bottom left corner of the net, scoring the final goal of the match.
Rowdies goalkeeper Fontein had a superb first half, denying the Lions their first goal of the night in several occasions. Orlando’s Watson had two clear chances in the first half, beginning in the 6th minute after he got through the back line, but Fontein denied the goal with a diving save. Watson once again broke free from the Rowdies defense in the 11th minute , shooting from the left side of the 18-yard box. Fontein was well positioned, diving to his left and sending the ball out for a corner kick.
18 minutes into the match, the reigning NASL Champions capitalized on their first chance of the night. Walker was able to intercept an Orlando pass near the midfield and found himself on a breakaway with Gallardo. After a 35-yard run, Walker entered the 18-yard box and scored the Rowdies go-ahead goal.
After Tampa Bay’s goal, the Lions looked to find the equalizer with the clearest chance coming in the 28th minute. Midfielder James O'Connor took a shot from just outside the 18-yard box, forcing Fontein to dive to his left and make a great save.
Minutes into the second half, Fontein once again held the Rowdies lead with a great stop on midfielder Jean Alexandre. Fontein would not be able to stop Watson's shot from inside the 6-yard box in the 49th minute. Watson scored the tying goal after the Rowdies defense was unable to clear a corner kick.
The equalizer created momentum for Orlando City, as they gave the Rowdies very little space to play. The Lions continued to pressure, scoring the 2-1 goal in the 58th minute from O'Connor's 19-yards shot. Orlando would strech the lead to two thanks to Alexandre's goal in the 70th minute.
Tampa Bay was able to score a second goal, after Mulholland placed his free kick in the back of the net in the 75th minute. The Rowdies continued to pressure for the tying goal, but Orlando's defense was able to withstand a final push by the NASL side.

Scoring Summary:
Rowdies - Amani Walker - 17th minute

Rowdies Defeat USF 1-0
The Tampa Bay Rowdies earned their first win of the 2013 season, defeating USF 1-0 on Saturday night at Corbett Soccer Stadium in Tampa, Fla. The NASL side scored the winning goal in 20th minute after a great individual run by forward Jemal Johnson.
The NASL Champions got off on the right foot, scoring in their first clear chance of the match. In the 20th minute, Johnson picked up a pass outside the box and found himself with a clear shot on USF’s goal. USF’s goalkeeper Matthew O’Neal was able to get a touch on the ball but it wasn’t enough to avoid the Rowdies first goal.
Tampa Bay's momentum continued after the opening goal, as forward Georgi Hristov eluded several defenders reaching the top of the 6-yard box in the 23rd minute. O’Neal once again came up with the save, denying the Rowdies their second goal.
USF’s best chance of the first half came in the 28th minute off a shot from forward Lindo Mfeka. The USF forward curled his shot from 25 yards outs, but Rowdies goalkeeper Andrew Fontein was well positioned to send the ball out for a corner kick.
Tampa Bay had the last chance of the half, when forward Amani Walker deflected a head on goal. Once again, O’Neal came up big for the Bulls keeping the score 1-0 at the half.
The reigning NASL Champions continued to push for the second goal of the night, creating several chances in the second half. Johnson looked to score his second of the night in the 59th minute entering the box from the right flank, but his shot went inches wide of the left post. In an almost identical play, the Rowdies were close from getting the insurance goal, but Johnson’s shot in the 73rd minute went wide left once again.
The last opportunity of the night came in the 77th minute, as Johnson curled a cross into the 6-yard box from the right flank. Substitute George Tor was at the end of the cross, but his header smashed off the crossbar, keeping the score 1-0.
The Rowdies defense was able to hold the one-goal lead, denying any scoring chances in the final minutes. With the 1-0 score, the Rowdies picked up their first win of the 2013 Preseason.
