Soccer Bowl 1979

Again, played at the Giants Stadium in NJ, the last time we see the Rowdies in a Soccer Bowl. 8th of September, 50,699 see Rodney Marsh play his last competative game in the NASL.
Despite the Rowdies fielding a strong team, they lose to the Vancouver Whitecaps 1-2.
Jan Van Der Veen scoring the only goal, also there is a strongly debated, disallowed
goal by Oscar Fabbiani, having watched the game a few times, I still cannot see why.
The team that day: Bilecki, Andruszewski, Connell, Kitchener Gorman, Anderson,
Van Der Veen, McLeod, Wegerle, Fabbiani, Marsh.
Substitutes: Baralic, Grnja.

  1. One of the finest games in NASL history. For Whitecaps fans it was the moment that lives on. After upsetting the Cosmos the week before, the 'Caps carried the momentum into the final. Despite over 60,000 tickets being sold only 50,000 showed up. Plenty of sore losers in Cosmosland. In 1983 when Vancouver lost in the semi-final they still sold out BC Place for the Soccer Bowl. The Rowdies played a very entertaining game, but in the end the better team did win. Good luck to the Rowdies in Soccer Bowl 2012 against Minnesota. Considering the Rowdies won the first Soccer Bowl in 1975, its time to bring it home.
