Jürgen Stars 1982, 1983; 1982 - 1984 (id)

Jürgen Stars was born June 24th, 1948 in Hamburg, Germany. He started his career with amateur Phoenic Lubek in 1967 with Rowdies' teammate Peter Nogly. Took his first stab at professional soccer in Germany with second division team SV Röchling Voelklingen, from 1971 to 1977, then joined up with best friend Nogly again at the world famous first division team HSV Hamburg in 1977.

He played there until 1980, when he made the move to Vfr OLI Burstadt for a year. In the meantime Nogly had made the move to the NASL with the Edmonton Drillers, and convinced Jürgen to try it too. Landed a place on the Calgary Boomers' 1981 roster, through the efforts of former Rowdies' Player Personnel Director Francisco Marcos.

Known as Starsky, because of his volunteer police work in Germany.

Played in every game of the 1981 season with the Boomers, posting a 1.65 goals against average. The Rowdies acquired his services through the NASL dispersal draft when Calgary folded. Although he had never played indoor soccer before, he split playing time with indoor veteran Winston DuBose and eventually won starting nods to lead the Rowdies through the playoffs to the league championship.

The following year he returned to Hamburg, as a replacement behind goalkeeper Ulrich Stone for the second time German champions.

Then, the 1982 outdoor season, saw him play in 15 games, allowing 35 goals for a 2.43 GAA. He started the season, lost the starting postion about 12 games in, to Canadian Tom Boric, and then to another Canadian Jack Brand. Then played the last three games of the season under Coach Al Miller, who gave him a vote of confidence for the 1983 season.

During the 1983 season, Jürgen made a total of 20 games played with a 2.83GAA, but had to share the position with Tom Boric and Skip Gilbert. Would make his final appearances in a Rowdies' jersey in the 1983-84 indoor season, making 26 starts and a 6.81GAA. In 1984 he would make the move to the Tulsa Roughnecks, making only 2 starts.

Today, he still turns out for the HSV Hamburg Old Boys team, Jürgen is on the front row with the yellow jersey.
