Rowdies vs. NSC Minnesota Stars

Rowdies 1 vs. NSC Minnesota Stars 3
A trio of first half goals from Lucas Rodriguez, Simone Bracalello and Kentaro Takada doomed the Rowdies to a 1-3 loss. Maykel Galindo scored a consolation goal in the 73rd minute, but it wasn’t enough for the Rowdies, who drop to 6-12-11 on the season.
The playoff-bound Stars were jockeying for postseason seeding in their final game of the regular season. Rodriguez took a shot in the 14th minute that was well saved by Rowdies goalkeeper Daryl Sattler, but the rebound came straight back to Rodriguez who put it in off the bottom of the crossbar to give the Stars the lead.
In the 39th minute, Devin Del Do gave Bracalello a ball on the corner of the Rowdies’ 18-yard box. Bracalello’s precise right-footed shot bent around the diving Sattler and tucked inside his left hand post to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
Five minutes later it was Del Do again collected the assist on a Stars goal. Del Do’s pass found the feet of Tanaka about eight yards from goal. Takada’s soft shot hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced over the goal line to give the Stars a 3-0 lead just before halftime.
“We gave up three goals in the first half. That’s not good enough. Not good enough for these fans and not good enough for this organization. It can’t happen,” said Rowdies Captain and defender Julian Valentin.
Galindo’s second half goal came from the right side of midfield, where Galindo was most effective all night. A hard shot from a sharp angle fooled Stars goalkeeper Matthew Van Oekel to cut the lead to 3-1. It was Galindo’s second goal of the season.
“It seems like it’s been consistent that we go a goal down, whether at home or on the road and we always have to battle back,” said Rowdies Interim Head Coach Perry Van Der Beck. “In the first half we were poor in the defensive midfield. That’s where we gave the ball away and unfortunately they made us pay.”
“It’s been a tough week and it’s a disappointing result but you have to try to find the positives. We came out with a good attitude in the second half. We could have quit, but we battled back. We have one more game and we’ll try to make the most of it,” said Valentin.

Montreal Impact vs. Rowdies

Montreal Impact 3 vs. Rowdies 0
A 3-0 loss to the Montreal Impact at Stade Saputo in Montreal on Sunday afternoon ended FC Tampa Bay’s hopes of reaching the playoffs in its inaugural season. The Rowdies needed at least a draw to keep their hopes alive but could not get the result.
Tony Donatelli put the pressure on FC Tampa Bay (6-11-11) early with a penalty kick in the 10th minute of play. Rowdies goalkeeper Josh Lambo was ruled to have brought down an Impact player inside the 18-yard box, forcing the referee to give a penalty kick. Donatelli’s kick went low to Lambo’s right hand side and beat the keeper, giving the home team an early 1-0 lead.
Things were further complicated defensively for the Rowdies in the 38th minute when central defender Yendry Diaz was forced off due to a leg injury. The Cuban was clutching at his leg as he was stretchered off the field. Julian Valentin replaced him.
Late into first half stoppage time, the Impact lead was doubled by forward Ali Gerba. A Leonardo Di Lorenzo corner kick found Gerba on the edge of the six-yard box. Gerba skillfully completed the bicycle kick to earn Montreal a two-goal halftime advantage.
The second half insertions of Mozzi Gyorio and Aaron King helped the Rowdies pile pressure on goalkeeper Matt Jordan and the Impact defense. Jordan was forced to make five saves in the game.
Gerba completed the score line in the 82nd minute with his ninth goal of the season on a Richard Pelletier assist.
FC Tampa Bay will now return home for the final two games of the season. The Rowdies take on the NSC Minnesota Stars on Friday, September 24th, as it celebrates State Farm Hispanic Heritage Night, at 7:30 p.m. The first 2,500 fans will receive State Farm hacky sacks. Rowdies 1 vs. Austin Aztex 1
With the final seconds ticking away, Aaron King scored a last gasp equalizing goal and rescued what could be a crucial point as the end of the regular season looms. Coming into the night, the Rowdies trailed NSC Minnesota by six points for the final playoff spot.
The Aztex came to town as winners just once in their last four games.
For most of the second half, it seemed as if Austin was turning its fortunes around as they continued to lead 1-0 with the clock nearing, and eventually eclipsing 90 minutes. It was not to be, though, as King collected his team-high 10th goal of the season and fourth goal in his last four games played.
“It was just one of those games where we were pressing and it was just about figuring out who was going to get the goal," said King. "Rob had a great hit and I was in the right place. I just had to keep it on target and luckily it went in for me."
The Rowdies opened the game in impressive fashion with an up tempo offense spearheaded by Aaron Wheeler. Wheeler, returning from an injury, was able to put in 68 minutes of work as he nears full fitness.
Ricardo Sanchez, always a threat to score with his free kicks, nearly took advantage of two spot kicks from just outside the Austin 18-yard box. Sanchez’s first try was just wide and hit the side netting on the near side of the goal. His second effort forced Austin keeper Miguel Gallardo to make a diving save to keep the ball from sneaking just inside the far post.
Austin withstood the pressure and jumped out to a lead in the 50th minute when Austin’s two Griffins worked together to score. Defender Leonard Griffin completed the final pass to forward Maxwell Griffin, who beat goalkeeper Josh Lambo. It was Max Griffin’s eighth goal of the season.
“I thought they scored against the run of play to be honest," said Rowdies Head Coach Paul Dalglish. "After they scored, they had more chances because we had to come out and try and go for a goal. After making a bad decision to come out before the goal, I thought Josh Lambo was absolutely magnificent. Credit to him for having the mental toughness to come back after that mistake and keep us in the game at times.”
Two second half substitutions made by Dalglish again turned the tide in favor of the home team.
Maykel Galindo was inserted into the game in the 68th minute treplacing Wheeler. Seven minutes later, King entered the game, replacing midfielder Kwame “JJ” Adjeman-Pamboe.
King’s goal secured the third draw this season with the Austin Aztex, who are in contention for the number one seed in the playoffs. All three draws have come via late goals for the Rowdies.
Jeremy Christie converted an 86th minute penalty kick on May 8th in the Rowdies home opener to earn a 2-2 draw. Eleven days later, Gordon Kljestan scored with an 88th minute free kick to secure a 3-3 tie at Austin.
“It feels like a victory when you score that late," said Dalglish. "They’re the best team in the league and we competed with them tonight. It just shows that when we’ve got our best 11 on the field, we can match up well with the rest of the league. For us to show that we can compete with them, it’s a big confidence boost for our guys.”
Lineups:
Rowdies Lineup: Lambo, Valentino, Morrow, Diaz, Millien, Adjeman-Pamboe (75' - King), Christie, Steele, Sanchez, Yamada (75' - Gyorio), Wheeler (68' - Galindo).
Austin Aztex Lineup: Gallardo, Bernard, Watson, Johnson, Alvarez, Griffin (78' - Patterson), Griffin, Sakuda, Callahan, Needham, Watson (69' - Yoshitake).

Goalscoring Summary:

An attendance of 7,832 witnessed what would be the last NASL game played at Tampa Stadium, A VERY SAD DAY!!
The Sting would overcome the Rowdies 2-3, Roy Wegerle and Neill Roberts would be the last NASL Rowdies to score.
With only one road game left at the Toronto Blizzard (L 0-1), the demise of the NASL was here.
The Rowdies would finish 1984 with a W9 L15 record. A sad end to what had been a great NASL franchise.
The team this day: Mausser, Connell, Kozic, Bolitho, Thompson, Van Der Beck, S. Wegerle, R. Wegerle, Roberts, Tatu, Karpun.
Substitutes: Lee, Lindsay.
